The King James Bible carries 63,779 cross references. Those are the small notes in the margins that send you from one verse to another, and Pastor Christoph Römhild had gathered them into a single digital dataset. In 2007 he and the researcher Chris Harrison drew every one of them as an arc over a line of the Bible’s chapters, Genesis at the far left and Revelation at the far right. ...
His credentials have never been matched. Offered anything by God in a dream, the young king asked for “a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong,” and the request so pleased heaven that wisdom was granted with wealth and honor thrown in. Kings and queens traveled continents to test him. Three thousand proverbs, the temple itself, a golden age. The Bible builds Solomon into the tallest intellectual figure it has. ...
A seventeenth-century mystic named Angelus Silesius compressed this entire post into a couplet. Christ could be born in Bethlehem a thousand times, he wrote, and it would profit you nothing unless he were born in you. That is the whole method, stated with maximum nerve. The gospel events happened, and the allegorical readers never much argued the point. Their claim ran deeper, that the events also describe a sequence that unfolds inside any soul undergoing awakening, so that the familiar scenes, manger, river, desert, mountain, cross, and empty tomb, compose the central panel of the scripture-wide map this site has been walking. The Gospel of Philip says outright that these things are to be understood symbolically, and Meister Eckhart preached the same birth in the soul from inside the medieval church. Here is the sequence, scene by scene. ...
Every spring, at Passover tables on every continent, the Haggadah issues one of the strangest commands in religious literature. In every generation, it instructs, each person must regard themselves as if they personally came out of Egypt. Personally. Not their ancestors. Them. Read that command seriously and the tradition itself is telling you the Exodus has an inside. The allegorical readers, whose map of the whole Bible this site laid out recently, were doing what the Passover table demands, and the Exodus was their masterpiece. Walked through from the inside, the old story stops being about the pharaohs’ Egypt and starts being about yours. ...
Pick up a Bible and look only at its architecture. Law, then histories, then wisdom books, then gospels, then a young community’s letters, and at the end a single blazing vision of return. Most readers treat that arrangement as a filing system. The old allegorical readers treated it as the point. Read through their eyes, the canon’s shape is a map of one soul’s transformation, with each division marking a stage. The claim sounds audacious until you remember who started this style of reading. Paul allegorized Sagar and Sarah outright, and left the method its motto, that the letter kills but the Spirit gives life. The Valentinian teachers took him at his word and read the whole shelf that way. Here are the map’s seven regions in order, as an overview the site can build on. ...
