Thomas 97 and 98: The Jar of Meal and the Assassin

You’ve probably carried a grocery bag with a small tear in the bottom. Somewhere between the car and the kitchen, a thin trail of rice follows you across the driveway, and you feel nothing. You find out when you set the bag on the counter and it slumps over, half as full as when you left the store. Jesus tells almost exactly that story in the Gospel of Thomas, and it appears in none of the four gospels in the Bible. Right after it comes a second parable missing from the canon, about a man who practices a murder before he commits it. Sayings 97 and 98 make a strange pair. Read together, they describe two ways a spiritual life can go, and they’re worth a slow look. ...

Thomas 70: What You Bring Forth Will Save You

Here is the version you’ve probably seen, on a poster or a quote site or tucked into a book on creativity: “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.” It’s a beautiful sentence. The two halves mirror each other perfectly, and the message is easy to carry around. Express what’s in you or it will eat you alive. Write the novel, start the business, say the thing you’ve been holding back. ...

Rumi and the Gospel of Thomas: The Reed and the Kingdom

In 1244, the most respected religious teacher in Konya met a wandering dervish named Shams of Tabriz, and the meeting ended the teacher’s career on the spot. Jalal al-Din Rumi had been a theologian of rank, head of his late father’s community, secure in his learning. Four years later Shams vanished, probably violently, and the scholar’s grief broke open into poetry that has not stopped moving readers in eight centuries. ...

Passwords for the Soul's Journey: What to Say When the Powers Ask Who You Are

Some scriptures comfort, and some instruct. A small strange handful coach, and the coaching is for an exam scheduled after your death. Several Gnostic texts contain what can only be called prepared answers, exact responses to be given when hostile powers stop the rising soul and demand identification. They read like cram sheets, and in a sense they are. The communities that wrote them expected a border crossing at the end of life, staffed by unfriendly officials, and they refused to send anyone up unrehearsed. What the rehearsals contain turns out to be a complete theology of identity, and it stays useful on this side of the border. ...

Cover art for Fasting From the World: rippling concentric circles radiating from a point of golden light on a deep blue gradient

How to Fast From the World

The Gospel of Thomas appears to contradict itself about fasting, and the contradiction is worth the price of the book. In saying 14, Jesus tells his disciples, “If you fast, you will bring sin upon yourselves.” Thirteen sayings later he warns, “If you do not fast from the world, you will not find the kingdom.” So fasting is spiritually dangerous, and fasting is spiritually mandatory. Texts this compressed rarely blunder into contradiction, which suggests the two sayings are a single teaching delivered in two strokes. The first knocks the practice out of your hands. The second hands it back aimed at a different target, and the difference between the targets is everything this post is about. ...

Movement and Repose: The Sign of Divine Origin

The Gospel of Thomas imagines you stopped at a checkpoint. Somewhere on the soul’s road, powers that patrol this world demand your papers, and saying 50 is Jesus issuing them in advance. Three questions are coming, he says, and he supplies the three answers. Asked where you come from, answer that you come from the light. Asked who you are, say, “We are its children, and we are the chosen of the living Father.” Then comes the strangest exchange in the sequence. Asked for the evidence of your Father in you, you are to answer, in Marvin Meyer’s translation, “It is motion and rest.” ...

The Tao That Can Be Spoken: Reading Thomas Alongside the Tao Te Ching

Most scriptures open by establishing authority. These two open by surrendering it. The Tao Te Ching begins with a warning that its own subject cannot be put into words, and the Gospel of Thomas begins by daring you to figure out what its words mean, with no promise that anyone will help. Two little books, composed on opposite ends of the ancient world with no possibility of contact, and they greet the reader with the same strange bow. ...

Meister Eckhart and the Gospel of Thomas: Two Voices, One Teaching

Around the year 1300, the most celebrated preacher in Germany told his congregations that God gives birth to his Son inside the human soul, and that the birth is happening now. Six centuries later, an Egyptian farmer dug up a banned gospel teaching that the kingdom of God is inside you, spread out and present, waiting to be noticed. The preacher never read that gospel. Nobody in his world could have. By his lifetime every known copy had been sealed in a jar beneath the desert for roughly nine hundred years, and it stayed there for six hundred more. Put his sermons beside its sayings, though, and the two begin finishing each other’s sentences. ...

How I Use AI as a Study Partner for Ancient Texts

Ask a chatbot for sayings from the Gospel of Thomas and you will get a generous list. Most of them will be real. One or two will be lovely, serene, perfectly on theme, and found nowhere in the Gospel of Thomas. The machine does not know it is lying, which is exactly what makes it dangerous to a student of ancient texts. I use AI to study these texts almost every day, and I am not giving that up. It is the most patient reading partner I have ever had, and the fastest. But the partnership only works under rules, and the rules took some burned fingers to learn. Here is the whole workflow, including the part where the partner gets caught inventing scripture. ...

When Jesus Called Fasting a Sin

Somewhere along the way, you probably picked up a spiritual checklist. Pray more. Give more. Maybe fast, if you get serious. And underneath it all, a low hum of guilt about never doing enough. The Gospel of Thomas records Jesus saying something that should make every checklist-keeper sit up: “If you fast, you will bring sin upon yourselves, and if you pray, you will be condemned, and if you give to charity, you will harm your spirits.” ...
