Thomas 70: What You Bring Forth Will Save You

Here is the version you’ve probably seen, on a poster or a quote site or tucked into a book on creativity: “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.” It’s a beautiful sentence. The two halves mirror each other perfectly, and the message is easy to carry around. Express what’s in you or it will eat you alive. Write the novel, start the business, say the thing you’ve been holding back. ...

You Already Have the Resurrection: The Letter to Rheginus

Near the end of the New Testament, two men get named and condemned for a single idea. Hymenaeus and Philetus, the writer of 2 Timothy warns, “say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some.” We never hear their side. Their teaching spreads “like gangrene,” the letter says, and then it drops them. In 1945 a jar came out of the Egyptian sand holding, among much else, a short letter from a teacher to a student named Rheginus, and its thesis is the sentence the church had warned against. Not that the resurrection will come. That it has. The Treatise on Resurrection is a sustained second-century argument for that position, it runs under two thousand words, and it turns out to be one of the warmest things in the whole library. Let’s walk through it and ask what living from it might look like. ...

Key Quotes from the Gnostic Texts

The buried texts were written to be carried, and their sentences show it. Short, strange, and built to detonate slowly, the best of them work less like arguments than like seeds, and the communities that treasured them seem to have used them exactly that way, one saying held close until it opened. Thomas announces on its first page that these are hidden sayings whose right interpretation is life itself, which is a strong claim to staple to a list of one-liners, and the sentences hold up under it. This collection gathers ten of the most powerful, chosen for meditation, each with a line or two of setting. All are quoted from Marvin Meyer’s translations in The Nag Hammadi Scriptures, the edition this site recommends owning, and each has been treated at length somewhere on this site for readers who want the full context. ...

Why Gnosticism Was Suppressed

In the spring of 367, the archbishop of Alexandria sent an Easter letter to the churches of Egypt, ordering believers to reject what he called illegitimate and secret books. His name was Athanasius, his letter contained the first known list of the New Testament exactly as we have it, and somewhere up the Nile, most likely at a monastery whose monks treasured the forbidden volumes, somebody responded by sealing a library in a jar instead of feeding it to a fire. ...

The Best Books for Exploring Gnosticism

Readers keep asking where to start, and the honest answer is that the field’s entrance is oddly shaped. Start with the ancient texts themselves and the unexplained names will throw you. Start with a bad modern summary and you inherit a century of distortions. The shelf below is the one this site actually works from, the books behind the quotes and claims in every post here. Eight titles, arranged not by importance but by reading order, with a straight answer about what each is for. ...

Gnostic Glossary: 20 Terms You Need to Know

Every tradition guards its door with vocabulary, and Gnosticism’s door is better guarded than most. Open any Nag Hammadi text cold and the aeons, archons, and pleromas arrive without introductions, which sends many willing readers straight back out. This glossary is the missing doorman. Twenty terms, defined in plain language, ordered so that reading straight through gives you the whole cosmology in miniature, from the unknowable source down through the fall, the world, the human layers, and the way back. Bookmark it, and the old texts open considerably easier, since between them these twenty words carry most of the weight in any Gnostic sentence you will ever meet. ...

Understanding the Apocryphon of John

It opens with a bad day. John, son of Zebedee, is walking up to the temple after the crucifixion when a Pharisee needles him about it. Your teacher deceived you, the man says, and filled your ears with lies, and John has no answer. He turns away from the temple and walks into the desert grieving, asking all the questions faith asks on its worst afternoon. How was the savior chosen, why was he sent, what is this world, and where are we going? ...

A Walk Through the Gospel of Truth

Somewhere in the middle of the second century, a Christian teacher composed a sermon that begins with the word joy. Not judgment, not sin, not the end of the world. “The gospel of truth is joy,” the first line announces, “for people who have received grace from the Father of truth.” The church that won history’s argument burned what it could of texts like this one, and for most of two millennia we knew it only from a complaint. Irenaeus, cataloging heresies around the year 180, grumbled that the Valentinians had produced something called the Gospel of Truth that bore no resemblance to the real gospels. He meant it as an insult. As a book review, it turns out to be accurate, because the text that surfaced in the Egyptian codex later named for Carl Jung resembles nothing else in early Christian literature. It rewards a slow walk. ...

The Gospel of Thomas: 114 Sayings You've Never Heard

In December 1945, an Egyptian farmer named Muhammad Ali was digging for fertilizer near the town of Nag Hammadi when his mattock struck something solid. He’d found a sealed earthenware jar containing thirteen leather-bound codices. Inside those codices were texts that had been hidden for over sixteen centuries, including a document that would change how scholars understood early Christianity. It’s called the Gospel of Thomas. And it contains 114 sayings attributed to Jesus that don’t appear in the Bible. ...

Thunder, Perfect Mind: The Voice That Shatters Categories

In 1945, farmers digging near the Egyptian town of Nag Hammadi unearthed a sealed earthenware jar containing ancient manuscripts. Among them was one of the strangest and most powerful texts in all of religious literature. It’s called Thunder, Perfect Mind. A voice speaks. She does not give her name. But she speaks in the first person, with authority, claiming identities that cannot coexist. She demands attention. She defies understanding. She shatters every category we use to organize reality. ...
